Ah the “Artist Statement”! For me it’s less about making a statement and way more about being in a state of mind, body, and soul! Being a maker is a way of life, a life style that keeps me on my toes moving and shaking through my daily grind and nightly rest/wrestling matches constantly turning over ideas, processes, tools, materials, client needs, worldly responsibilities, and/or whatever creeps and/or weeps into my subconscious. This is a kinetic method of living, putting things together - taking things apart until a marriage is made that simply works. If you work and work and work mostly your product does too. I seek to make things that have energy, warmth, humor, and zest that helps make life worth living for me the maker and hopefully for those who experience the product. The outward style of the piece is less important, like with a person’s appearance, the strength lies in the core of the creation, the character, and the guts!
I understood early in life that I thrived in the world of doing and making, all the while engaged in the kinetic dance of life. Put me down in a chair and demand of me to color within the lines was a kiss of death. Give me an assignment to make a model of a covered wagon and I was fully pizzazed “go west young man go west”. I pitied my primary teachers.
As making things has been a lifetime of passion for me, I’m constantly thrilled by what lurks around the corner. I welcome all to help me and join in on this journey of discovery and renewal, please if you’re willing, stop me in my tracks, to rant and rave, chill and chat, muse and reflect, ponder and wonder, or whatever and whenever. For Bob Ingram (one of the founders of the Philadelphia Furniture show) making things has been a lifetime passion.
